The air in the throne room crackled, not with the usual oppressive silence that had become the hallmark of my mother’s reign, but with a raw, untamed energy. It was the energy of defiance, the scent of rebellion thick and intoxicating, and it emanated from me. My heart hammered a frantic rhythm against my ribs, a drumbeat for the battle to come. Across the polished obsidian floor, my mother, Fayette Verian, sat upon her throne, a figure carved from pure, unyielding obsidian herself. Her gaze, sharp and cold as a winter storm, fixed on me, her youngest child, the one she had always underestimated.
“You’ve grown bold, Juanette,” her voice was a silken caress, laced with the venom of a viper. “Too bold, perhaps. Juani, my dear boy, has been most… informative.”
My stomach clenched. Juani. My brother, my shadow, my mirror image in his terrifying devotion to our mother’s cruelty. He had always been the favored son, the heir apparent, the one who embraced the darkness within our lineage. He was here, standing beside her, a predatory grin stretching across his face. He held a gleaming sword, its hilt encrusted with dark gems that seemed to pulse with malevolent light.
