The air in the royal citadel was thick enough to chew, a cloying perfume of stale power and the metallic tang of fear. It had been my mother’s scent for as long as I could remember, a pervasive, suffocating presence that clung to the very stones of this place. Now, though, it was mingled with a new scent, sharp and clean like ozone before a storm: the scent of rebellion. My rebellion.

We stood at the precipice, a ragtag collection of hope and defiance, poised to leap into the heart of the beast. Beside me, Fayeleen’s hand was a cool, steady weight in mine, her elven eyes, usually alight with mischief or fierce determination, were now shadowed with a quiet understanding. She squeezed my fingers, a silent promise that no matter what lay ahead, we faced it together.

“Ready, Juanette?” Harmon’s voice, usually so measured, held a tremor of anticipation. His fingers, calloused from years of weaving arcane energies, rested on the worn leather of his spell pouch. He’d been honing his skills, pushing his limits, all for this moment, all to give me the edge I so desperately needed.
