The Price of Power

The chill of the Verian dungeons clung to me like a shroud, a damp, earthy smell that spoke of despair and forgotten lives. It was a stark contrast to the opulent halls I’d grown up in, a constant reminder of the rot festering beneath the gilded surface of my mother’s reign. Juani had thrown me in here, of course. He’d been so pleased with himself, his eyes gleaming with a cruel imitation of Mother’s ambition as he’d watched the guards drag me away. “A fitting punishment for a traitor, little sister,” he’d sneered, his voice dripping with a venom I’d never heard him use before. And Mother, as always, had simply watched, her expression unreadable, her silence a damning endorsement.

They’d left me here for two days, two long, agonizing days where the only company I had were the rats skittering in the shadows and the ragged sobs of those imprisoned with me. I’d heard their stories, whispered fragments of lives broken by Mother’s decrees, by Juani’s insatiable hunger for power. A farmer who’d been forced to surrender his meager harvest to feed the Queen’s ever-growing army, his family now starving in a barren field. A merchant whose entire livelihood had been confiscated for the crime of a perceived slight against Juani. The tales were a litany of suffering, each one a fresh stab to my conscience.

It was during the second night, huddled against the cold stone, that I heard the clatter of keys, the heavy groan of a cell door opening. My heart leaped into my throat. Was it Juani, come to gloat? Or worse, Mother, to deliver a final pronouncement of my doom? But the figure that emerged from the gloom wasn’t either of them. It was Fayeleen.
