The air in the hidden alcove beneath the old market district was thick with the scent of damp earth and desperation. It was our sanctuary, a place where the echoes of Fayette’s iron grip couldn’t quite reach, though we all felt its chilling presence. We huddled together, the flickering light of a single, sputtering torch casting long, dancing shadows that seemed to mock our fragile hopes. My heart hammered against my ribs, a frantic drumbeat against the suffocating silence.

“Are we sure about this?” Harmon’s voice, usually so steady, held a tremor that mirrored my own unease. He was meticulously cleaning his staff, his brow furrowed in concentration. His magic, potent and untamed, was our greatest asset, but even he seemed to doubt the audacity of our plan.

Fayeleen, ever the calm in our storm, placed a reassuring hand on his arm. Her presence was a balm, a silent promise of unwavering support. “We have to be sure, Harmon. The people are starving, living in fear. We can’t just stand by and watch anymore.” Her gaze met mine, and in her emerald eyes, I saw a reflection of my own fierce resolve, mingled with a flicker of fear.
