It had been a week since the incident at the market, a week since the guards had dragged away Old Man Hemlock for the crime of humming a tune that sounded suspiciously like the old Verian freedom song. The whispers, once a timid murmur, had grown into a low, constant hum of unease that vibrated through the cobblestone streets and into the very marrow of our bones. And now, the hum had escalated, morphing into a roar that threatened to shatter everything.

My mother, Fayette, was furious. Not the cold, calculating fury she usually displayed when a general displeased her or a trade route faltered, but a raw, visceral rage that made the very stones of the palace seem to tremble. She had learned. Not how, or who, but she knew *something* was stirring, a seed of rebellion she had tried so desperately to stamp out before it could sprout. And her response was as predictable as it was terrifying: more iron, more fist, more absolute control.

"They're everywhere, Juanette," Fayeleen whispered, her usually bright eyes clouded with a fear that mirrored my own. We were huddled in the dusty back room of the abandoned Weaver’s Guild, the scent of old wool and desperation thick in the air. Garun, ever the optimist, was attempting to lighten the mood by juggling three bruised apples, his loud pronouncements about "apple-tastic escapes" falling flat against the grim reality outside. Harmon sat cross-legged by the single grimy window, his brow furrowed as he traced arcane symbols in the condensation.
