The air in the training chamber hung thick with the scent of ozone and frustration. Sweat slicked my brow, clinging to stray strands of hair that had escaped my braid. My hands, usually steady when I was planning, trembled as I tried to channel the raw power that surged through me. It was like trying to hold a tempest in a teacup.

"Again, Juanette," Harmon's voice, calm and measured, cut through the din of my own internal chaos. "Focus. You are the conduit, not the storm itself."

I gritted my teeth, picturing the glowing orb I was supposed to conjure. Instead, sparks, erratic and wild, danced at my fingertips, spitting and crackling like angry sprites. They were a poor imitation of the controlled, radiant light I’d seen Harmon summon, a beacon of pure energy. My magic felt… untamed. A reflection, perhaps, of the fury that simmered beneath my skin, a constant thrum against the suffocating normalcy of my mother’s oppressive reign.
