Chapter 8
Echoes of the Past
Sir Kaelen confronts his own past regrets while protecting Elara. He shares stories of his fallen order and the importance of courage. Elara learns about the wider world and the consequences of unchecked power, strengthening her resolve.
The air in the Living Grove was thick with the scent of damp earth and ancient moss, a perfume that clung to Elara’s skin like a second cloak. Sunlight, filtered through the impossibly dense canopy, dappled the mossy floor in shifting patterns of emerald and gold. It was here, amidst the humming life of the sanctuary, that Sir Kaelen, his face etched with a weariness that went deeper than mere fatigue, finally turned his gaze fully upon her. He sat on a fallen log, his scarred hands resting on the pommel of his sheathed sword, a posture of readiness even in repose.
“You ask about the world beyond these trees, child,” he began, his voice a low rumble, like stones shifting under a riverbed. “And you should know it. Not just the dangers, but the heart of it. Elara settled beside him, her own hands tracing the intricate patterns of lichen on the log. She had learned much in the Living Grove. Elder Lyra’s teachings were a balm to her spirit, each lesson a careful unfolding of the vibrant tapestry of her magic. She could coax vines to weave intricate shields, command roots to trip pursuers, and understand the silent language of wilting leaves. But Kaelen’s stories offered a different kind of knowledge, one of men and their follies.
