The air in the Whispering Woods hung thick and heavy, a cloying miasma of damp earth and decaying leaves. Sunlight, a rare commodity here, filtered through the dense canopy in fractured, emerald shafts, painting shifting patterns on the moss-laden ground. Elara, her breath catching in her throat, stumbled over a gnarled root, her worn leather boots skidding on slick stone. Sir Kaelen’s calloused hand, surprisingly gentle, steadied her.

“Careful, lass,” he rumbled, his voice a low growl that seemed to vibrate with the very roots of the ancient trees. His eyes, sharp and assessing, scanned their surroundings, missing nothing. The grizzled knight was a bulwark of weathered leather and steel, his scarred face a map of battles fought and lost. Yet, in his gaze, Elara detected a flicker of something akin to concern, a warmth that belied his gruff exterior.

“It’s just… so much,” Elara whispered, her fingers unconsciously brushing against the rough bark of a towering oak. A faint tremor ran through the tree, a subtle thrum of life that only she seemed to perceive. Her own magic, still a wild, untamed thing, pulsed in response, a restless energy that mirrored the ancient wood. “Every step feels like we’re sinking deeper into something… alive.”
