The sky above the Verdant Sanctuary, usually a tapestry of serene blues and gentle clouds, had curdled into an oppressive, bruised purple. A tempest of Valerius’s making, a churning vortex of dark energy, clawed at the ancient wards that had protected this hidden haven for centuries. Dust and debris rained down from the sky as the magical barriers groaned, their shimmering resistance faltering under the relentless assault. Inside the central grove, where the great Heartwood pulsed with an inner light, a hushed dread had settled upon the assembled guardians and the few villagers who had sought refuge within its embrace.

Elara stood at the edge of the grove, her heart a frantic drumbeat against her ribs. Beside her, Sir Kaelen’s hand rested on the hilt of his worn sword, his gaze sharp and unwavering as he scanned the encroaching darkness. The wards shattered with a sound like a thousand tons of glass breaking, a deafening shriek that echoed through the valley. The dark storm descended, not with thunder, but with a chilling silence that pressed in on all sides, extinguishing the natural sounds of the sanctuary – the rustling leaves, the chirping insects, the gentle murmur of the stream. Valerius’s magic was a suffocating blanket, a void that sought to consume all life.
