Chapter 11
The Siren's Song
While seeking passage across a shimmering lake, they meet mermaids Megan and Layla. Megan, with a hidden secret, sings a captivating, almost dangerous, song.
The air hung thick with the scent of damp earth and something else, something sweet and wild, as Aurora and Blossom emerged from the dense foliage. The Whispering Woods, as they had begun to call it, had finally yielded to a view that stole Aurora’s breath and made Blossom’s eyes widen with an almost unbearable glee. Before them stretched a lake, not like any they had ever seen. Its surface shimmered with an internal light, not reflecting the sky, but rather projecting hues of amethyst and rose, as if a nebula had decided to settle upon the water’s surface. Strange, bioluminescent flora pulsed with a gentle rhythm along its banks, casting an ethereal glow that danced on the ripples.
“Aurora, look!” Blossom’s voice was a hushed exclamation, her hand instinctively reaching for her sister’s. “It’s… it’s like a dream painted on water.”
Aurora, ever the observer, scanned their surroundings. The woods behind them seemed to recede, the trees growing taller and more ancient, their branches impossibly twisted. There was a stillness here, a profound quietude that felt both peaceful and unnerving. The lake itself offered no immediate clue as to how they might cross it, and a gnawing unease settled in Aurora’s stomach. They needed to find a way to the other side, a place where they might learn more about this realm, about themselves, and perhaps, about a path home.
