Chapter 6
Echoes and Lore
I meet the Keeper of Echoes, who shares fragments of local lore tied to my past. Her weary words offer a piece of the puzzle, though incomplete, hinting at a larger, hidden truth.
The path I followed wound through ancient trees, their branches gnarled like the fingers of forgotten gods. Sunlight, filtered through a canopy so dense it seemed to hold its own twilight, dappled the forest floor in shifting patterns. Each step I took felt deliberate, a conscious effort to press forward, to outpace the gnawing uncertainty that clung to me like a damp shroud. My journey had been a series of fleeting encounters, of whispers that dissolved upon closer inspection, of paths that veered away just as I thought I was nearing a destination. I was a boat adrift, the currents of others’ stories pulling me in directions I didn’t understand.
It was the scent of woodsmoke, faint at first, then growing stronger, that drew me off the well-trodden track. It promised warmth, a hearth, perhaps even a human voice that spoke with a steadiness I hadn’t encountered in too long. The trees thinned, revealing a small clearing, and nestled within it, a cottage. Smoke curled lazily from its stone chimney, a beacon of domesticity in the wild embrace of the forest.
As I approached, a figure emerged from the shadows of the doorway. She was an elderly woman, her face a roadmap of wrinkles, her eyes the color of faded denim, holding a depth of weariness that spoke of seasons weathered and stories untold. She leaned on a carved wooden staff, her movements slow and deliberate. Her presence was not imposing, yet it held a quiet gravity, like the weight of stones that have lain undisturbed for centuries.
