The chill of the European winter had seeped into Mihail’s very bones, a testament to the arduous journey he’d undertaken. Days of walking, fueled by a desperate urgency, had brought him to the familiar gates of the hunting lodge, a place that held the semblance of home, yet was often a gilded cage. News of the woman who had shown him the most consistent kindness, the one who had nurtured him in the rare moments he was allowed to be present, had reached him at the unforgiving military school. Without a word, without permission, he had slipped away, a small, determined figure against the vast, unforgiving landscape. His arrival, however, was met not with solace, but with the brutal hand of Andrew, the man who had been tasked with his upbringing. The words, sharp and cutting, spoke of shame and disgrace, of a transgression against the very fabric of the royal family’s honor. The beating that followed was swift and merciless, leaving Mihail bruised and bleeding, his silent plea for connection met with violent rejection. Immediately, he was dispatched back to the cold, unfeeling institution, the punishment for his act of love a harsh prelude to his eventual graduation.

It was during one of his rare rides through the surrounding countryside, astride a magnificent Lippizan stallion gifted by the King, that Mihail’s gaze fell upon her. The village, a stark contrast to the manicured grounds of his upbringing, was a world away from his own. And amidst the simple dwellings, a young peasant girl stood out, a flicker of unexpected beauty against the muted backdrop. Her features, with a hint of gypsy allure, were framed by a shy, obedient demeanor. Her father, like Andrew, was a man bound by the rigid social strata of their time, forbidding any association with those of higher standing. Yet, despite the insurmountable barriers between their worlds, an undeniable connection sparked. In stolen moments, away from prying eyes and judgmental whispers, they met in secret. Her name was Anna, and at nineteen years old, she was a nine-year difference that seemed to bridge an entire universe, yet in their clandestine meetings, it melted away, replaced by a burgeoning affection that defied the rigid decree of their fathers and the unwritten laws of society. This innocent, yet forbidden, love was the beginning of the end, the first crack in the carefully constructed facade of his life in Austria-Hungary.
