The scent of damp earth and gunpowder was a permanent fixture in Sharlene’s nostrils, a suffocating perfume that clung to her uniform and her very soul. Even away from the immediate roar of battle, the war was a constant hum beneath the surface of her consciousness, a thrumming anxiety that kept her on edge. She’d seen enough, done enough, to feel the weight of it settle deep in her bones. France was her home, her duty, and she’d sworn to protect it with her life. But lately, that oath felt like a leaden cloak, heavy and suffocating, especially when her thoughts drifted to the stolen moments, the hushed words, the forbidden touch of a man who was supposed to be her enemy.

She was cleaning her rifle, the familiar ritual a small anchor in the swirling chaos of her emotions, when she heard the whisper of her name. “Sharlene.”

Her head snapped up, her heart leaping into her throat. The voice was low, familiar, and laced with an unnerving sweetness. Standing a few feet away, leaning casually against the rough-hewn timber of a barrack wall, was Le Saino. He was dressed in his crisp French uniform, the material impeccably tailored, a stark contrast to the mud-stained fatigue of most of the men. His smile was a predator’s, sharp and charming, his eyes, a startling shade of blue, held a glint of something calculating.
