The earth shuddered again, a gut-wrenching tremor that vibrated through Sharlene’s very bones. The sky, a bruised canvas of smoke and fire, wept embers onto the churned landscape. This was it. The grand offensive. The one that was supposed to break the Italian lines, the one that was supposed to bring them one step closer to the end of this endless, gnawing war. But as Sharlene ducked behind a crumbling stone wall, the acrid smell of gunpowder stinging her nostrils, all she could think of was Ki.

The roar of artillery was a physical force, battering her ears, rattling her teeth. Her squad moved with a grim, practiced efficiency, their faces grim masks of concentration. But beneath the determined facade, a tremor of fear ran through them all. This was not a skirmish; this was the maw of war, wide open and hungry. Sharlene gripped her rifle, her knuckles white. Every instinct screamed at her to push forward, to do her duty, to be the soldier France expected her to be. Yet, a counter-current pulled at her, a desperate yearning for a different kind of battlefield, one where the only casualties were hearts broken by longing, not by shrapnel.

The air crackled with the symphony of destruction. Machine guns chattered like angry insects, punctuated by the concussive blasts of mortars. Sharlene advanced with her unit, her eyes scanning the ravaged terrain, the skeletal remains of trees, the craters that scarred the earth like open wounds. She saw the desperation in the eyes of the soldiers beside her, the same raw fear mirrored in her own heart. This was the price of patriotism, the steep, bloody cost of nations locked in a deadly embrace.
