Every rustle of leaves, every distant birdcall, had sent a jolt of anxiety through them, a phantom echo of pursuit. But now, as the sun dipped below the jagged horizon, painting the sky in hues of bruised purple and fiery orange, a fragile calm began to settle.

They sat by a small, crackling fire, the flames dancing in their eyes, reflecting a shared exhaustion and a nascent hope. Sharlene leaned her head against Ki’s shoulder, the simple gesture of profound comfort.
