Sara’s boots crunched on the damp earth, each step a familiar rhythm against the backdrop of distant artillery fire. The air, thick with the metallic tang of war, clung to her like a second skin. She found Sharlene by the makeshift barricade, the same place they’d often sought refuge from the relentless noise and the gnawing fear. Sharlene was cleaning her rifle, her movements precise, almost mechanical, but Sara saw the subtle tension in her shoulders, the way her gaze seemed to drift beyond the immediate horizon.

“Still at it, Dubois?” Sara’s voice was deliberately light, a stark contrast to the grim reality surrounding them. She slid down the rough-hewn wood, settling beside her friend.

Sharlene offered a faint smile, her eyes finally meeting Sara’s. “Someone has to keep it in working order, Quinn. You know how the Captain gets if our equipment isn’t pristine.”
