The Unseen Citadel
The van stops at a vast, windowless building. They are led into a desolate parking lot that seems to descend, hinting at a hidden world below.
The jarring screech of brakes, a sound so violently out of place against the gentle lapping of water that had lulled them moments before, ripped through the stunned silence. Anya’s head snapped up, her eyes, still stinging from the rough gag, darting around the confines of the van. The air, thick with the metallic tang of fear and something else, something acrid and industrial, pressed in on them. Chloe whimpered beside her, a small, choked sound that Anya felt in her own chest. Maya was rigid, her knuckles white where she gripped the edge of her seat, her usual composure shattered. Sophia, surprisingly, was quiet, her breathing shallow, her eyes wide and unfocused.
The van door slid open with a mechanical groan, spilling harsh, artificial light into the dim interior. A rough hand grabbed Anya’s arm, yanking her forward. She stumbled, her legs shaky, the scent of exhaust fumes and stale sweat assaulting her. Outside, the world was a stark contrast to the romantic canals of Venice. They stood in what appeared to be a vast, cavernous space, the air cool and still, devoid of any breeze. Towering walls, made of some unyielding, dark material, rose on all sides, utterly featureless, utterly devoid of windows. It was a building that seemed to have been swallowed by the earth, a monument to concealment.
“Move it,” a gruff voice barked, the words guttural and devoid of any discernible accent.
