Forced into Darkness

Gagged and terrified, the friends are bundled into a cramped van. The rough journey offers no comfort, only the suffocating fear of the unknown destination.

The rough canvas of the gag scraped against Anya’s tongue, each involuntary flinch a fresh wave of irritation. The van, a metal beast with a personality as unpleasant as its odor of stale cigarettes and something vaguely metallic, jolted and swayed with a reckless abandon that sent them all tumbling against each other. Chloe, pressed against Anya’s side, let out a muffled whimper, her usual vibrant energy reduced to a trembling current of fear. Maya, ever the pragmatist even in this abyss, was trying to assess their surroundings, her eyes darting even through the blindfold, seeking any sliver of information. Sophia, the youngest and usually the most boisterous, was surprisingly still, her breathing shallow and rapid, a stark contrast to her usual impulsive nature.

The journey felt interminable, a torturous ballet of bumps and sudden stops. Anya tried to count the minutes, to track the passage of time, but the rhythmic drone of the engine and the disorienting movements made it impossible. Her mind, usually a well-oiled machine of deduction and analysis, felt sluggish, bogged down by the sheer terror of their situation. She replayed the last few moments in the gondola, the sickening lurch of realization as the masked men appeared, the cold steel of a gun against her temple. It had happened so fast, a nightmare unfolding in broad daylight, or rather, in the deepening twilight of that forgotten canal.

Chloe’s hand found Anya’s, her fingers cold and clammy. Anya squeezed back, a silent promise to protect her, a promise that felt increasingly hollow with each passing mile. They had always been a unit, Anya and Chloe, two peas in a pod bound by shared secrets and a mutual rebellion against the mundane. Their parents, both distant and demanding in their own ways, had never quite understood their shared fascination with the macabre, the thrill they found in old black-and-white horror films. While other girls collected stickers or swooned over pop stars, Anya and Chloe were dissecting plot holes in B-movies and debating the merits of practical effects versus CGI. It was this shared passion, this kindred spirit, that had fueled their shared dream of escaping to Venice, a city steeped in history and, as they’d always imagined, a touch of gothic romance.
