Anya shielded her eyes, her gaze sweeping across the desolate landscape. They had emerged into a scrubby, unkempt field, the kind that time had forgotten, bordered by a chain-link fence that seemed to sag under the weight of neglect. Beyond it, a lonely highway stretched into the hazy distance, a ribbon of asphalt promising escape, but also a chilling reminder of the world they had so abruptly left behind. The van, its engine sputtering a final, guttural sigh, was already a distant memory, a metallic beast that had transported them from innocence to terror.

Chloe whimpered, clutching Anya’s arm. Her knuckles were white, her breath coming in ragged gasps. The vibrant spirit that had danced in her eyes just hours before was extinguished, replaced by a deep, unsettling fear. Maya, ever the pragmatist, was already scanning their surroundings, her brow furrowed in a desperate attempt to impose order on the chaos, while Sophia, her usual boisterous energy subdued, simply stared ahead, her gaze vacant.
