The silence was a palpable thing, a heavy blanket woven from fear and the metallic tang of stale air. Anya pressed her back against the cold, unyielding concrete, the rough texture a grounding sensation against the frantic thrumming in her chest. Beside her, Chloe’s breath hitched, a tiny, almost inaudible sound that nonetheless ripped through Anya’s concentration. Maya, ever the pragmatist even in the face of utter despair, was meticulously checking the fastenings of the makeshift gag still tied around her mouth, her eyes wide and darting, absorbing every detail of their surroundings. Sophia, usually the most vocal, was unnervingly still, her face a pale mask of terror, her gaze fixed on something Anya couldn't quite discern in the oppressive gloom.

“Okay,” Anya whispered, her voice a dry rasp. She swallowed, trying to dislodge the knot of apprehension that had taken root in her throat. “Okay, we move. Slowly. Remember the plan.”

The plan. It was a fragile thing, born from whispers in the suffocating darkness of their makeshift prison, a desperate gamble pieced together from Anya’s sharp observations and Chloe’s surprisingly steady nerves. They had been “doxxed,” as Sophia had grimly put it, their personal information somehow accessed and exploited. The masked men, their voices a low rumble that had sent shivers down their spines, had spoken of “assets” and “leverage,” of a debt being paid. It was a language devoid of humanity, reducing them to commodities.
