The air in the van was thick, not just with the stale, metallic scent of the vehicle itself, but with the cloying perfume of fear. Anya, pressed against the cold metal wall, tried to catalog the sensations, the tremors of the road beneath them, the rough texture of the gag biting into her lip, the dull ache in her wrists where the zip ties had been cinched tight. Beside her, Chloe’s breathing was shallow, punctuated by small, almost silent whimpers. Maya, ever the pragmatist even in extremis, seemed to be focusing on the rhythm of the engine, her eyes wide and unblinking. Sophia, usually the most vocal of them, was a bundle of tightly coiled tension, her small frame trembling.

They had been jolted and bounced for what felt like an eternity, though Anya suspected it was far less. Time had warped, stretching and compressing in the aftermath of the ambush. The abrupt transition from the sun-drenched canals of Venice to this suffocating darkness was a disorienting nightmare. The gondolier, a man whose smile had seemed so genuine, had steered them into that impossibly dark, stagnant stretch of water with a casual flick of his wrist. The sudden appearance of the three men, their faces obscured by dark cloth, their movements swift and brutal, still played on repeat in Anya’s mind. The cold, hard press of a gun barrel against her temple, the rough hands that shoved her into the van, the stifling gag that robbed her of her voice – it was all too real, too immediate to be a bad dream.

The van finally shuddered to a halt. The engine died, plunging them into an even deeper silence, broken only by the frantic thumping of their own hearts. The side door scraped open, letting in a sliver of dim, artificial light. A gruff voice barked an order in a language none of them understood, but the intent was clear. They were being herded out, pushed and prodded with unseen hands. Anya stumbled, her legs stiff and uncooperative. She caught a glimpse of a vast, cavernous space, dimly lit by fluorescent tubes that hummed with an unsettling drone. The air here was cooler, tinged with the smell of damp concrete and something vaguely chemical.
