The air in the concrete bunker was thick, heavy with the scent of damp earth and something metallic, like old pennies. Anya tried to catalog the smells, a nervous habit, a way to anchor herself when the world tilted too far off its axis. This world had tilted, then plummeted. The van’s interior had been suffocating, the rough fabric of the gag scratching at Chloe’s already chapped lips. Now, the gag was gone, but the silence that had descended upon them was a different kind of suffocating, a vast, echoing void where their excited chatter about gelato flavors and ancient Roman ruins used to be.

They were in a room. Or perhaps a series of rooms. The single, bare bulb suspended from the low ceiling cast an unflattering, stark light, illuminating grey, unadorned walls that seemed to absorb sound. There were no windows. None. The building, if that’s what it was, felt like a tomb, buried deep beneath the earth. They’d descended, had Anya not been so disoriented, she might have noted the precise angle, the subtle hum of machinery that vibrated through the soles of her worn sneakers.

Chloe huddled closer to Anya, her knuckles white where she gripped her cousin’s arm. Her usually vibrant eyes, the color of a stormy sea, were wide with a fear that Anya recognized, a fear that mirrored her own, though Anya fought to keep it buried beneath a veneer of cool logic. Maya sat stiffly, her posture a testament to her ingrained respect for order, even in this utter chaos. Her academic mind, Anya knew, was struggling to process the illogical, the impossible. Sophia, the youngest, the one who’d always chased after every fleeting impulse, was surprisingly quiet, her gaze darting around the room with a frantic energy that belied her stillness.
