The air in the abandoned observatory was heavy, thick with the scent of dust, decay, and something else—a metallic tang that Harding couldn't quite place. It clung to the back of his throat, a harbinger of the confrontation he knew was coming. Moonlight, fractured by grimy panes of glass, painted the decaying interior in stark contrasts of light and shadow, a fitting stage for the unveiling he anticipated. He’d followed Serenity’s diary, the cryptic directions leading him to this forgotten place on the outskirts of town, a place that had once reached for the stars but now only harbored secrets.

He reached the main dome, the vast circular space where the telescope, a skeletal behemoth, was now draped in cobwebs. Around its base, arranged with unnerving precision, were several figures. They stood like statues, their faces obscured by the deep hoods of their robes, the same dark fabric that had been described in the few, fragmented accounts of the society’s existence. Harding felt a prickle of recognition, a chilling echo of the shadowy figure in Serenity’s photograph.
