The weight settled in my chest, a familiar ache that had become a constant companion. It wasn’t a sharp pain, not anymore. It was a dull, insistent throb, like a bruise that refused to fade, even after the initial impact was long gone. I sat at my keyboard, the blank screen a stark white canvas mirroring the emptiness I felt inside. The cursor blinked, a tiny, rhythmic pulse that mocked my own stagnant heart.

"Promises turned to dust," I murmured, the words tasting like ash on my tongue. It felt like a fitting epitaph for what we’d had. Each broken vow, each whispered commitment that dissolved into air, had chipped away at the foundation of trust, leaving only rubble behind. I remembered the fervor with which we’d laid those stones, convinced of their permanence, of a future etched in granite. Now, it was just dust, fine and pervasive, settling over everything.

I traced the rim of my mug, the ceramic cool against my fingertips. It was late, the kind of late where the world outside seemed to hold its breath, waiting for dawn. The streetlights cast long, distorted shadows across my room, figures dancing in the periphery of my vision. They were the ghosts of every decision I’d made, every path I’d chosen, every chance I’d let slip through my fingers.
