The air in the abandoned warehouse hung thick with the scent of decay and something metallic, something that spoke of recent violence. Dust motes danced in the single beam of light slicing through a grimy skylight, illuminating the tableau of Robert’s demise. Pamela knelt, her gloved fingers tracing the dark stain on the concrete floor, a stark contrast to the sterile white of her gloves. Marie stood a few feet away, her face a mask of stunned disbelief, her eyes wide and unfocused. The official report, a hastily scribbled document declaring suicide, felt like a mockery in this desolate space.
“He wouldn’t have done this, Pam,” Marie whispered, her voice barely audible above the drip of unseen water. “Robert… he was too afraid of pain.”
Pamela remained silent, her gaze sweeping the cavernous room. Fear was a primal instinct, one she understood intimately. But Robert’s fear, she suspected, had been directed outwards, towards those he had wronged. The gun, found nestled in his palm, felt staged. Too perfect. Too clean.
