The air in the opulent, art-deco office of Sterling Enterprises felt thick with unspoken accusations, each polished surface reflecting the strained faces of the two women standing before the imposing mahogany desk. Pamela, her jaw tight, met the gaze of Julian Sterling, their supposed business rival. Marie, beside her, clutched a damp tissue, her eyes red-rimmed but holding a flicker of defiance that Pamela hadn’t seen in years. Sterling, a man whose tailored suits seemed to exude an almost predatory aura, leaned back in his chair, a faint, unreadable smile playing on his lips.

“To what do I owe this… unexpected pleasure, ladies?” Sterling’s voice was smooth, like aged whiskey, but it carried an undertone of something sharp and dangerous. He steepled his fingers, his eyes, the colour of a stormy sea, flicking between Pamela and Marie.

Pamela took a step forward, her detective instincts on high alert. “We’re here about Robert, Mr. Sterling. About his death.”
