The air thrummed with a new kind of tension, a prickling awareness that settled deep in Anya’s bones. It wasn’t just the rustle of leaves or the distant cry of a hawk; it was a feeling of being watched, a shadow that stretched long and cold even under the midday sun. Elara, usually so steady, moved with a nervous haste, her eyes darting to the edges of the forest, her hand often resting on Anya’s shoulder as if to anchor her, or perhaps to shield her.

They had spent weeks nestled in a small, forgotten cottage at the edge of the Whispering Woods, a place Elara had found through hushed conversations with a traveling merchant who owed her a favor. It was a haven, or so Anya had believed. The days were filled with the simple rhythm of gathering berries, mending clothes, and Anya’s endless questions about the world beyond their secluded clearing. But lately, the rhythm had faltered, replaced by a restless unease.

“Are you sure we should stop here, Elara?” Anya asked, her voice barely a whisper as they paused by a gurgling stream, the late afternoon sun dappling the mossy stones. Anya’s water skin was full, her satchel light, but Elara’s gaze seemed fixed on something beyond the trees.
