The forest pressed in, a breathing, rustling entity that seemed to absorb the frantic pounding of Elara’s heart. Each snap of a twig underfoot, each distant hoot of an owl, was a drumbeat of dread. Anya, oblivious to the terror that clawed at Elara’s throat, skipped ahead, her bright laughter a fragile echo against the ancient trees. She was chasing a butterfly, its wings like stained glass, flitting through shafts of dappled sunlight.

“Anya, stay close!” Elara’s voice was a strained whisper, betraying her fear. She scanned the dense undergrowth, her eyes wide with a vigilance that had become second nature. Every shadow seemed to writhe with unseen threats. How long could they keep this up? How long before the Queen’s spies, or worse, the Queen herself, found them? The royal decree, a chilling testament to Seraphina's paranoia, had been plastered in every village they’d passed, a desperate search for a princess who was right under her nose. Anya, with her untamed spirit and her strange, burgeoning abilities, was a beacon, and Elara was terrified of what would happen when the darkness finally found her.

“But Elara, look!” Anya called, her voice filled with innocent wonder. She pointed towards a clearing bathed in an ethereal glow. Tiny, luminous figures, no bigger than a man’s thumb, danced in the air, their wings shimmering with iridescent light. Sprites. Elara had only heard of them in hushed tales, creatures of pure magic, rarely seen by mortal eyes.
