Flight into the Wild
On the run, Anya and Elara journey through treacherous forests, their bond strengthening with every step, facing the unknown with dwindling hope.
The forest floor, once a familiar tapestry of fallen leaves and moss-kissed stones, now felt alien and hostile. Each rustle in the undergrowth sent a jolt of fear through Elara, her hand instinctively tightening around Anya’s smaller one. They had been running, it seemed, for an eternity, the cheerful chatter of their village life a distant, faded echo. The sun, once a comforting presence, now filtered through the dense canopy in fractured, anxious beams, painting shifting patterns on their hurried path. Anya, her bright eyes wide with a mixture of confusion and nascent fear, stumbled slightly, her worn boots catching on an exposed root.
“Careful, little bird,” Elara murmured, her voice a low hum of concern, pulling Anya closer. The maid’s face, usually etched with the gentle lines of contentment, was now a mask of worry, her gaze constantly sweeping their surroundings as if expecting shadows to coalesce into pursuers. The magic, the unsettling, uncontrolled bursts of light and warmth that had first manifested in Anya’s playful attempts to coax wilting flowers back to life, had now become a terrifying liability. The incident with the village elder’s prize-winning pumpkin, which had inexplicably swelled to the size of a small cart before bursting in a shower of golden seeds, had been the final straw. The whispers that had begun as curious murmurs had escalated into fearful pronouncements, and Elara knew, with a certainty that chilled her to the bone, that it was no longer safe for Anya to remain.
“Elara, my feet hurt,” Anya whispered, her voice small. She looked up at the maid, her brow furrowed. “Why are we walking so fast? And why are we leaving Mama’s cottage?”
