Anya's latent powers surge unexpectedly, a burst of light saving Elara. This display of magic marks them, forcing them to abandon their home.

The scent of woodsmoke and damp earth clung to Elara’s small cottage like a second skin, a comforting aroma Anya had known her entire life. It was a scent of home, of safety, of Elara’s warm hands and gentle lullabies. Today, however, the familiar comfort was laced with a thread of unease, a prickling sensation that had begun to weave itself into the fabric of Anya’s days since the king’s men had ridden through their village, their trumpets blaring the royal decree.

Anya, her hands dusted with flour from a failed attempt at baking bread – the dough stubbornly refusing to rise, as if mirroring her own restless spirit – watched Elara mend a torn tunic by the hearth. The rhythmic scrape of the needle through the rough cloth was usually a soothing sound, but today it seemed to amplify the tension that hummed in the air. Elara’s brow was furrowed, her lips pressed into a thin line, and Anya knew, with a certainty that bypassed words, that her guardian was worried.

“It’s the decree, isn’t it?” Anya asked, her voice barely above a whisper. She scraped the lumpy dough from her fingers. “The one about finding the lost princess.”
