Whispers of Wonder
Strange events surround Anya: flowers bloom out of season, animals are drawn to her. These subtle magic hints at a destiny she cannot comprehend.
The scent of pine and damp earth was Anya’s constant companion, a familiar perfume that clung to her simple woolen dress and tangled itself in her chestnut hair. Elara’s small cottage, nestled at the edge of the Whispering Woods, was the only world Anya had ever known. It was a world of hearth fires, mended clothes, and the gentle rhythm of the seasons, a world that felt as solid and dependable as the ancient oak outside their door. Yet, lately, a tremor had begun to ripple through that solidity, a subtle discord that Elara tried, with increasing desperation, to smooth over.
It started with the flowers. Anya had always possessed a green thumb, or so Elara would chuckle, her eyes darting nervously towards the shadowed eaves of the forest. But this was different. One crisp autumn morning, as Anya wandered near the stream, her gaze fell upon a patch of snowdrops, their delicate white heads pushing defiantly through the frost-kissed earth. Snowdrops bloomed in the spring, a fact Anya knew from Elara’s lessons, yet here they were, impossibly vibrant, their petals unfurling as if kissed by the sun. Elara, finding Anya marveling at the sight, had quickly pulled her away, murmuring about the oddities of nature and the importance of staying close to home.
Then came the animals. Squirrels, usually skittish and prone to chattering warnings, would approach Anya with an almost unnerving boldness, their tiny
