Chapter 13
Infiltrating the Castle
Disguised, they enter Eldoria. Anya sees the kingdom her aunt has ruled, the people unaware of the true queen hidden in plain sight.
The roughspun cloaks, meant to blend into the dusty roads and bustling marketplaces, felt like a second skin now, a familiar disguise for the journey’s end. Elara tugged the hood lower over Anya’s vibrant auburn hair, her fingers brushing against the girl’s cheek. “Remember what we practiced,” she murmured, her voice a low hum against the din of the approaching city. “Keep your eyes down, speak only when spoken to, and no sudden movements. Eldoria is a grand place, Anya, but not always kind to those who stand out.”
Anya nodded, her heart a hummingbird trapped in her chest. Eldoria. The name itself had always held a touch of mystery, a whispered legend in Elara’s stories of faraway lands. A faint, golden light spilled from countless windows, hinting at a life she had only ever dreamt of.
They had traveled for weeks, the whispers of the Hermit of Whispering Peaks still echoing in Anya’s mind – tales of a stolen birthright, a usurped throne, and a destiny intertwined with the very heart of Eldoria. The hermit’s words, delivered with the gravity of ancient stones, had been a terrifying revelation, stripping away the comfortable simplicity of her life with Elara and replacing it with a burden of knowledge too heavy for her young shoulders. But with that knowledge came a resolve, a quiet strength that had been growing within her since that fateful night in the hermit’s cave.
