The air in the hermit’s cave hung thick with the scent of dried herbs and ancient dust, a comforting balm after the chill of the mountain wind. Anya sat cross-legged on a worn mat, her heart a frantic bird trapped within her ribs. Elara, ever watchful, sat beside her, her hand a warm, steady weight on Anya’s knee. Before them, the Hermit of Whispering Peaks, his eyes like chips of polished obsidian, slowly stirred a pot that simmered over a low flame. The liquid within glowed with an unnatural, milky luminescence.

“You ask for truth, child,” the hermit’s voice rumbled, a sound like stones shifting deep within the earth. “Truth is a sharp blade, often best left sheathed.”

Anya swallowed, her throat suddenly dry. “But I need to know, sir. Who am I? Why do these… things… happen around me?” She gestured vaguely, her gaze flickering to her hands, as if expecting them to erupt in light.
