Chapter 6
Chapter 6: Cracks in the Facade
Kyungmin witnesses Hanjin's moments of vulnerability, the rare instances where his mask slips. He offers quiet support, a stark contrast to the overt desires of Shinyu and Dohoon.
The late afternoon sun, usually a warm balm, felt thin and watery as it filtered through the practice room windows. Hanjin traced the condensation on his water bottle, the cool dampness a welcome distraction from the clamor of his own thoughts. The music blared, a relentless beat that usually served to sharpen his focus, but today it felt like a dull thudding against his skull. He could feel eyes on him, a familiar prickle that usually meant someone was admiring his effortless grace, or perhaps studying his technique for their own gain. Tonight, however, the gaze felt different. Sharper. More assessing.
He stole a glance towards the corner where Kyungmin sat, ostensibly scrolling through his phone, but Hanjin knew better. Kyungmin’s stillness was a language all its own, a quiet observation that bypassed all the usual defenses. Kyungmin didn't fall for the practiced smiles or the carefully calibrated charm. He saw the exhaustion etched around Hanjin’s eyes when the cameras weren’t rolling, the slight tremor in his hands when he thought no one was watching.
Earlier, during a particularly grueling dance practice, Hanjin had stumbled, a rare misstep that sent him sprawling onto the polished floor. The music had stopped abruptly, and for a fleeting, terrifying second, Hanjin had felt the carefully constructed facade crumble. He’d felt a raw, unadulterated panic, a fear of exposure that was far more potent than any stage fright. He’d scrambled up, offering a sheepish smile, a quick apology, and a promise to do better. But he’d seen Kyungmin’s eyes, not with pity or judgment, but with a quiet understanding that had both unnerved and soothed him.
