Salem is summoned by his parents to discuss his impending betrothal to a suitable noblewoman. He struggles to conceal his true feelings for Elara, the conflict tearing him apart.
The heavy oak door of the King’s chambers swung inward with a groan that echoed the unease settling in Prince Salem’s chest. Sunlight, usually a cheerful visitor, seemed to filter through the stained-glass windows with a somber hue today, casting elaborate patterns of ruby and sapphire across the polished marble floor. His parents, King Theron and Queen Isolde, sat on their ornate thrones, their faces etched with the familiar lines of regal responsibility, yet today, there was an added layer of gravity to their expressions. Lord Valerius, the Royal Advisor, stood a respectful distance behind them, his usual smooth smile in place, but his eyes, sharp and assessing, seemed to pierce through Salem’s carefully constructed composure.
“Salem,” his father’s voice boomed, the sound accustomed to command, “approach.”
Salem’s boots made no sound as he moved across the floor, his heart a frantic drum against his ribs. He kept his gaze fixed on the imposing figures before him, resisting the urge to glance at Valerius, whose presence always felt like a coiled serpent. He had spent the morning with Elara, their stolen moments by the whispering river a stark contrast to the gilded cage he was about to re-enter. The scent of wildflowers clung to his tunic, a fragrant reminder of her laughter, her vibrant spirit, and the impossible chasm that separated their worlds. He could still feel the warmth of her hand in his, a fleeting, forbidden warmth that now felt like a brand against his skin.
