The King's Concern

King Theron, proud and loving, notices Aurelia's growing restlessness. He attributes it to youthful ennui, unaware of the depth of her dissatisfaction and her burgeoning desire for a different path.

King Theron, a man whose benevolence was as well-established as the ancient oak in the royal courtyard, surveyed his daughter with a fond, albeit slightly perplexed, gaze. He sat at the head of the grand dining hall, the polished mahogany reflecting the flickering candlelight and the even more polished silver of the royal cutlery. Princess Aurelia, across from him, was a picture of regal grace. Her posture was impeccable, her smile a gentle curve of perfectly sculpted lips, and her sighs, when they escaped, were no louder than the rustle of silk. Yet, Theron, a man who had navigated the choppy waters of statecraft for decades, could sense a subtle dissonance. It was like a single off-key note in an otherwise flawless melody, a tiny tremor beneath the surface of placid perfection.

“Another exquisite banquet, Father,” Aurelia murmured, her voice as smooth as river stone. She gestured delicately with her fork, indicating the roasted pheasant that had, just moments before, been the subject of her polite, yet unenthusiastic, consumption. “The chef truly outdoes himself.”

Theron beamed. “He does indeed. And you, my dear, are looking radiant tonight. Though, if I may be so bold,” he leaned forward, his brow furrowing slightly, “you seem a touch… distant. Is the pheasant not to your liking?”
