Aurelia, now simply Aurelia, found herself perched precariously on a rather wobbly stool in a tavern that smelled faintly of stale ale and questionable life choices. This was a far cry from the perfumed halls of her former castle, where the air was so carefully curated it practically hummed with the silent disapproval of dust motes. Here, the air vibrated with boisterous laughter, the clatter of tankards, and the rhythmic thumping of a lute played with more enthusiasm than skill.

She’d traded her silk slippers for sturdy leather boots that, frankly, felt a bit too tight. Her royal gown had been replaced by a serviceable, if slightly mud-splattered, tunic and breeches that offered a freedom of movement she hadn’t realized she’d been missing. The kingdom’s bewildered amusement at her abdication had, thankfully, faded into a sort of resigned, albeit slightly scandalized, acceptance. King Theron, bless his traditional heart, had managed a choked farewell, muttering something about “unforeseen circumstances” and “a rather strong desire for artisanal cheese.” Captain Borin, she suspected, was still practicing his interpretive dance moves in private, perhaps to the bewildered stares of the castle pigeons.

The Traveling Jester, who had shed his motley for the anonymity of the road, sat opposite her, his eyes twinkling with an entirely familiar mischief. “And how does our erstwhile princess find this… establishment?” he asked, his voice a low rumble that somehow cut through the din. He gestured with a half-eaten chicken leg. “Not quite the royal banquet, eh?”
