The whispers began as soon as Princess Aurelia’s final, delicately worded decree, delivered with a smile that didn't quite reach her eyes, echoed through the marble halls. They started in the kitchens, a low hum of disbelief among the scullery maids polishing silver that would soon belong to someone else. They slithered up to the tapestry room, where the seamstresses paused their needlework, their nimble fingers momentarily stilled by the sheer audacity of it all. By the time the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of indignant orange and bewildered purple, the entire kingdom was aflutter with speculation, a veritable aviary of gossip.

King Theron sat in his study, the thick velvet curtains drawn against the encroaching twilight, though no amount of fabric could shield him from the tempest brewing within. His usually placid brow was furrowed, his fingers drumming a frantic, irregular rhythm on the polished mahogany desk. He’d reread Aurelia’s letter a dozen times, each perusal only deepening his confusion. “Abdicate?” he muttered, the word tasting foreign and bitter on his tongue. “My Aurelia? The epitome of grace, the very blueprint of royal comportment? Abdicate for… what, precisely?”

He’d always assumed her sighs, those ethereal exhalations of mild discontent, were merely the gentle breezes of a princess whose every whim was catered to. He’d seen her as a perfectly sculpted statue, admired for her flawless form, never imagining the restless spirit churning beneath the marble. He remembered her dragon-training escapades with a fond, albeit slightly mortified, chuckle. The royal guard’s brief, and frankly disastrous, foray into interpretive dance? He’d dismissed those as youthful eccentricities, the peculiar whims of a young woman with too much time on her hands and a rather eccentric jester for company. Now, however, those eccentricities seemed to have coalesced into a grand, bewildering pronouncement.
