The air in the royal gardens, usually thick with the cloying sweetness of roses and the hushed tones of courtiers, felt different that afternoon. A subtle shift, like a breath of wind rustling through leaves that had grown too still. Princess Aurelia, perched precariously on the edge of a stone bench, was attempting to balance a teacup on her nose. It was, she admitted with a silent, sophisticated sigh, another spectacularly failed attempt at injecting vivacity into her existence. The teacup, as expected, clattered onto the manicured lawn, narrowly missing a perfectly sculpted topiary unicorn.
Across from her, perched on the very same bench with an unnerving lack of royal decorum, sat Pipkin. He was, as always, a riot of mismatched colours and jingling bells, his face a mask of exaggerated cheer. He’d just finished a particularly impressive juggling act involving three overripe plums and a rather startled-looking robin. The robin, thankfully, had made a swift and dignified escape.
“A noble effort, Your Highness!” Pipkin declared, his voice a melodious rumble that somehow managed to be both booming and intimate. “A brave foray into the perilous world of porcelain peril! Though, I must confess, the unicorn looked rather unimpressed. Perhaps it prefers its tea served in a chalice?”
