Chapter 6
Chapter 6: The Hungry Dark
Harold continues his flame-speaking training, but the approaching entity shakes the pocket dimension more violently. Master Eldrin reveals the entity is a Shade—an ancient predator that devours reignited souls. Harold pushes his flame duration to 206 seconds, but the Shade nearly breaks through. Lady Anya discovers a passage in her book that describes the Shade and realizes the danger. Meanwhile, Lord Valerius intercepts a message from his father warning him that 'something old is stirring' near the academy, and he begins to suspect Harold's survival.
The boundary shuddered a third time. Harold felt it in his teeth, in the marrow of his newly-reignited bones, in the flame that still flickered obediently in his palm. The vibration was wrong—not like thunder, not like an earthquake, but like something breathing against the walls of reality, testing for weaknesses.
Master Eldrin had not moved. His shimmering form stood rigid, eyes fixed on a point Harold could not see, as if he were watching a predator circle just beyond the edge of visible light.
'What is it?' Harold asked. His voice came out steadier than he felt.
