The air in Mr. Abernathy’s office had, by this point, developed a permanent scent of desperation and stale coffee. It clung to the worn leather of the chairs and seemed to seep from the very pores of the man himself. I, Tiamoh Nguetsop, was once again the primary source of this olfactory distress, my own anxiety a potent perfume that even the strongest air freshener couldn't hope to mask. This was it. The final act. Or, at least, I fervently hoped it was the final act, because frankly, my nerves were starting to resemble overcooked spaghetti.
Mr. Abernathy, a man whose hairline was in full, dignified retreat, pushed his spectacles further up his nose. He looked at me as if I were a particularly stubborn stain he couldn’t quite scrub out. "Mr. Nguetsop," he began, his voice a low rumble of utter weariness, "are you absolutely, one hundred percent, beyond a shadow of a doubt, certain about this?"
I nodded vigorously, perhaps a little too vigorously. My head felt like a bobblehead on a particularly bumpy road. "Yes, Mr. Abernathy. Absolutely. This is… this is the end of it. No more complications. Just… clarity." I tried to inject a note of calm finality into my voice, but it came out sounding more like a strangled gasp.
