The air in our modest living room had always been a peculiar blend of Ekwene's simmering discontent and my own desperate attempts at placid evasion. It was a domestic atmosphere that could curdle milk at twenty paces. But on this particular Tuesday, a new, even more potent, aroma had begun to permeate the usual miasma: the scent of impending doom, seasoned with the faint, yet unmistakable, whiff of fish.
I’d been trying to orchestrate a delicate balancing act, a feat of marital gymnastics that would have impressed even the most seasoned contortionist. My days were a meticulously planned tapestry of excuses, strategically timed phone calls, and feigned business trips. My nights were a minefield of sudden exhaustion and feigned sleep. Ekwene, bless her perceptive soul, had started noticing the frayed edges of my performance. Her nagging, once a familiar, albeit irritating, soundtrack to my life, had morphed into pointed interrogations.
"Tiamoh," she’d begun, her voice laced with that particular brand of suspicion that could strip paint, "you smell… odd. Like… like cheap perfume and desperation. And is that… is that *fish* you’re wearing?"
