The cracks in Tiamoh's facade widen. Ekwene's suspicions grow, while Yolande senses his evasiveness. The stage is set for escalating, absurd arguments as Tiamoh desperately tries to keep his two worlds from colliding.
The air in our apartment had developed a peculiar thickness, a sort of domestic fog that seemed to cling to the furniture and even permeate my very thoughts. It wasn’t the usual kind of smog, the sort that choked cities and turned sunsets into apocalyptic spectacles. No, this was a much more insidious, personal brand of atmospheric pollution, a miasma of Ekwene’s perpetual discontent. It was the kind of air that made you want to confess to crimes you hadn’t committed, just to achieve a moment of blessed silence.
"Tiamoh," Ekwene’s voice, a finely honed instrument of gentle accusation, sliced through the quiet hum of the refrigerator. "Did you remember to pick up the… the thing?"
The "thing." The nebulous, ever-shifting "thing" that constituted the bulk of Ekwene’s daily directives. It could be anything from a specific brand of exotic spice that only existed in her imagination to a philosophical treatise on the proper alignment of the sofa cushions. My brain, already a frantic hamster on a wheel of deception, stalled.
