The weight of the ancient chronicle felt heavy in Princess Phoenix’s hands, a physical manifestation of the burden that had settled upon her heart. Sunlight, once a familiar comfort, now seemed to cast long, accusatory shadows across the polished marble floors of the royal library. Each turn of the brittle, yellowed pages had been a descent into a darkness she hadn't known existed within the very walls of her kingdom, a darkness perpetuated by those she had trusted implicitly. Elder Maeve, the keeper of traditions, the gentle dispenser of wisdom, was at the center of it all.
Phoenix stood before Maeve’s chambers, the intricately carved oak door a barrier between her burgeoning knowledge and the woman who had woven so many of the kingdom’s narratives. The air in the corridor was thick with the scent of dried herbs and age, a familiar aroma that now felt laced with deceit. Taking a deep, steadying breath, Phoenix knocked, the sound echoing with a finality that startled her.
The door creaked open, revealing Maeve bathed in the soft glow of a single, flickering lamp. Her silver hair was pulled back into its customary neat bun, and her eyes, usually warm and crinkled at the corners, held a guarded sharpness. "Phoenix, child," she said, her voice a low murmur. "To what do I owe this late visit?"
