Chapter 13
Borin's Orders
Captain Borin intercepts Phoenix, acting on orders to prevent her from delving further. He represents the rigid adherence to rules that blinds many to the truth.
The laughter of the villagers, a melody usually as familiar and comforting as the chimes of the castle clock, seemed to echo with a hollow resonance today. Princess Phoenix found herself pausing, a half-eaten honey cake forgotten in her hand, as she surveyed the bustling market square. Sunlight, dappled through the eaves of the timber-framed buildings, painted cheerful patterns on the cobblestones. Children chased pigeons, their delighted shrieks weaving through the murmur of conversation. Merchants hawked their wares, their voices booming with practiced enthusiasm. It was, by all accounts, a perfect day in the Kingdom of Phoenix. Yet, a disquiet, a subtle dissonance, had begun to creep into her heart.
It was the periphery that drew her eye. Beyond the vibrant stalls, past the blooming flower boxes that adorned every window, lay a part of the village that seemed to exhale a different air. The buildings sagged, their once-bright facades faded to a weary grey. The cobblestones were cracked, choked with weeds, and the laughter that spilled from the main square did not reach these shadowed corners. A strange stillness permeated the air, a quiet that felt less like peace and more like a held breath. Her curiosity, a constant companion, tugged at her. She had walked these streets a thousand times, yet this section, this pocket of neglect, had only recently registered.
Driven by an impulse she couldn't quite articulate, Phoenix veered away from the merry throng. She chose a narrow alley, its entrance almost swallowed by an overgrown ivy vine. The sunlight, so generous moments before, was reduced to mere slivers here, painting the damp stone walls with an eerie, greenish hue. The scent of blooming jasmine from the main square was replaced by the damp, earthy smell of decay, a faint, metallic tang that prickled her nose. Each step seemed to deepen the silence, muffling the distant sounds of the village until they were but ghosts of merriment.
