The cobblestones of Montmartre were slick with a fine mist that clung to the air like a whispered promise. Paris, even in the inky cloak of midnight, felt alive, a breathing entity humming with secrets and dreams. I’d thought I was coming here to escape, to find a sliver of myself that Mark’s betrayal had chipped away, but instead, I was finding something entirely new, something that pulsed with an energy I hadn’t felt since… well, since before I even knew what that kind of energy felt like.
Antoine, his hand a warm anchor on the small of my back, guided me through the labyrinthine streets. His laughter, a rich, melodic sound, echoed off the ancient stone buildings. We’d been wandering for hours, fueled by strong coffee, even stronger wine, and a conversation that flowed as easily as the Seine. It was a far cry from the sterile quiet of my old life, the hushed tones of the courtroom, the forced pleasantries at dinner parties. This was vibrant, messy, and utterly intoxicating.
“You are looking at the city as if it holds all the answers, Sarah,” Antoine said, his voice a low rumble in the quiet night. We’d paused on a small, dimly lit square, the faint glow of a distant streetlamp illuminating the intricate ironwork of a nearby balcony.
