Chapter 4
An Unexpected Croissant
Wandering through Parisian streets, Sarah literally bumps into Antoine. Their witty banter and instant connection surprise her, challenging her jaded view of love and relationships.
The cobblestones of Paris, usually a source of whimsical delight, felt more like an obstacle course that morning. I was on a mission, a self-imposed one, to devour a pain au chocolat from a specific boulangerie Isabelle had raved about. My mind, however, was less on flaky pastry and more on the sheer, unadulterated joy of being utterly, gloriously lost in this city. No deadlines, no court dates, no lingering scent of Mark’s cheap cologne on my pillow. Just me, a crumpled map I’d barely glanced at, and the tantalizing promise of sugar and butter.
I rounded a corner, a narrow street lined with impossibly charming buildings, their wrought-iron balconies overflowing with geraniums. A street musician was coaxing a melancholic tune from an accordion, and the scent of fresh bread mingled with the faint aroma of exhaust fumes – a distinctly Parisian perfume. Lost in the symphony of the street, I wasn’t watching where I was going. My gaze was fixed on a particularly vibrant window display of macarons, a kaleidoscope of pastel dreams.
Then, impact. Not a gentle nudge, but a full-on collision, sending my carefully clutched map flying and me stumbling backward. A muffled grunt, a flurry of apologies in a language I only vaguely understood, and then, a voice. A voice that cut through the morning air like a perfectly struck chord.
