The gentle hum of the espresso machine was a familiar lullaby, a sound that had become as comforting as the worn velvet of my favorite armchair. Paris, in its infinite wisdom, had a way of weaving normalcy into the most extraordinary circumstances. It had been six months since I’d traded the sterile gleam of my law office for the cobblestone charm of this city, six months since I’d traded the icy grip of betrayal for the warm embrace of Antoine. And yet, life, in its ever-present quest for a good laugh, decided to throw a curveball.
It started subtly, like a faint tremor before an earthquake. Antoine, my spontaneous, artistic Antoine, had become… predictable. Not in a bad way, exactly. He still painted with a fervor that made my heart ache, still waxed poetic about the perfect shade of cerulean, still could find a hidden gem of a bistro on any given street. But the wild spark, the delightful unpredictability that had first drawn me in, seemed to have dimmed. He’d started scheduling our dates, meticulous calendar entries for “Picnic in Luxembourg Gardens” or “Evening at the Louvre, Impressionist Wing.” It was lovely, of course. It was *safe*. And safety, I was learning, was a dangerous trap for a woman who had once defined herself by her meticulous planning and her even more meticulous divorce.
“You’re quiet tonight, *mon amour*,” Antoine said, his voice a low rumble that usually sent shivers down my spine. He was sketching at our kitchen table, his brow furrowed in concentration, the faint scent of turpentine clinging to him like a second skin.
