The Night Before the Big Fight
Artie grapples with nerves and the reality of facing Boris. He confides in Brenda, who offers unexpected encouragement. He realizes this is more than just about rent money now.
The silence in my tiny, rented room felt heavier than usual, thick with the unspoken dread of what tomorrow held. The chipped paint on the walls seemed to mock me, each imperfection a tiny testament to my perpetual state of financial disrepair. Outside, the city hummed its indifferent tune, a symphony of lives far more ordered and successful than mine. I, Arthur Pumble, the accidental king of the ‘I Need Rent Money’ championship, was about to face the ultimate test. Boris. The Bruiser. A man whose knuckles probably had knuckles.
I’d spent the last few weeks in a blur of bewildered victories. Each win felt like a fluke, a cosmic joke played at my expense. I’d stumbled, I’d flailed, I’d even, on occasion, accidentally headbutted myself. Yet, here I was, the undisputed champion, with a wad of cash in my pocket that felt both miraculous and terrifyingly temporary. Tonight, though, the temporary felt particularly precarious. Boris wasn’t a guy you could accidentally trip or outsmart with a well-timed sneeze. Boris was a force of nature, a human wrecking ball with a permanent scowl etched onto his face.
My stomach churned, a nervous knot tightening with every tick of the cheap clock on my bedside table. I’d tried to ‘train,’ which mostly involved me awkwardly punching pillows and trying not to dislocate my shoulder. Sal, bless his opportunistic heart, had offered advice that amounted to little more than a shrug and a “Just don’t get yourself killed, kid.” Helpful.
