Chapter 4
Boris the Bruiser's Icy Glare
The reigning champ, Boris 'The Bruiser,' notices the new sensation. Intimidated by Artie's unexpected success and his own ego bruised, Boris vows to crush the 'Rent Money Champion' and reclaim his throne.
The stale air of the ‘Rumble Room’ was thick with the usual cocktail of sweat, cheap beer, and unspoken desperation. It clung to the peeling paint, to the grimy canvas of the ring, and most importantly, to the assorted collection of hopefuls and has-beens milling about. My pockets, for the first time in what felt like an eternity, weren't entirely empty, but the weight of that newfound cash felt less like a victory and more like a ticking time bomb.
My last bout, against a fellow named ‘Knuckles’ McGee, had been a blur of flailing limbs and pure, unadulterated panic. I’d won, of course. How, I still wasn't entirely sure. The crowd, a motley crew of hardened faces and wide-eyed newcomers, had roared, and Sal ‘The Fixer’ Moretti, a man whose smile could sell ice to an Eskimo, had shoved a wad of bills into my hand with a gleam in his eye that spoke of future profits.
Tonight, however, the usual buzz felt different. There was an undercurrent of tension, a palpable shift in the room’s energy. It was the kind of quiet that precedes a storm, or, in this case, the arrival of a very large, very angry man. Heads turned, conversations hushed, and a path cleared as if parting the Red Sea for a particularly unpleasant deity.
